Sony don't support Windows 8 on your model. There are no Windows 8 Drivers and Utilities on the support page for your model here: -

When you installed Windows 8, did you choose to UPGRADE by choosing "Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps." on the "Choose what to keep" screen? You need to keep the existing Windows 7 Drivers and Utilities after the Windows 8 install.

These cannot be installed afterwards as most sony software are 'updates' only and require the original software and the Recovery Partition to be installed already.

Do you get any image on an external monitor connected via the VGA Port?

This will tell us if it is the Screen or inverter or if it is more seriously the graphics chip.

I assume you are shooting JPEGs?

In addition to the Image Quality, you need to set the Image Size to "Large" to get up to 3872 x 2592. Perhaps the Image Size is set to "Medium" at a maximum of 2896 x 1936.

To change the Image Size

MENU button - > Camera 1 -> [Image Size]

Please look in Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM Drives and check for the Error Code.

There is usually a fairly simple fix to most error codes - just let us know the Code for your drive.

Unfortunately the A290 is not compatible with any Sony vertical grip.

8.15.10.1872 is a Windows 7 driver for the Mobile Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M. Looking at the support pages for your model, I see this driver comes in both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. How big is the downloaded file? The 32-bit version is 60.19Mb and the 64-bit version is 78.8Mb - check you have the correct version.

Another explanation may be that this driver is already installed. Check the version of the installed driver to see if it, or a more recent version, is already installed.

You could try downloading the correct driver manually fron the support website here: -

Alternatively, you can download the latest driver from the Intel website.

You may be right that Vaio Update is misbehaving because you have changed the OS but in the end, all you need to know is that you have the correct driver installed. If it is then you may need to just ignore this update suggestion.

VAIO laptop (SVE153Q1EB) crashed following disk error

I'm afraid it may already be too late. You should never carry out a Refresh Windows unless you have a full backup of all programs and data. The 'Refresh' option formats the drive and clean installs Windows 8 - the only things retained are a few applications downloaded from the Windows Store and some Windows Settings. Everything else you have added, your data and all Sony preinstalled software and drivers will be lost.

Because of the preinstalled software and the customised Sony drivers, a Refresh is not of much use on a Vaio unless you intend a clean install.

You will probably need to carry out a full Recovery of the Vaio to factory settings and start again from scratch. I presume you did not make Recovery Discs when you first got the Vaio?

What was the disc error you got? You may need to contact Vaio Support if the disc is damaged on 0870 240 2408 and you will need the correct Vaio Product Model (probably starts SVE1513xxx) and also the Vaio's Serial Number which you will find on the box.

Windows 8 does do some unexpected things and this new Refresh feature is not helpful!!

Do you mean VGN-Z31XN?

Sony do not support Windows 8 on this model. nVidia Guard Service is not a graphics driver. - it plugs a few security issues with the nVidia Windows 8 Drivers. You need a nVidia Graphics Driver first. Where did you get the graphics driver you installed with Windows 8 for the NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS GPU?

You may need to get a driver and modify the installer .INF file to allow it to install. Have a look at this website and read the 'Getting Started' section at the bottom of the right-hand column: -

Sony only update graphics driver if there is a problem with the existing version - unless you have a problem, I would stick to the Sony supplied driver.

If you particularly need an updated driver for a specific purpose, you will need to modify the installer .INF file as you can only install Sony drivers on your Vaio.

At your own risk, have a look at this website. Be sure to read the 'Quickstart Guide' at the bottom of the right-hand column.

Where did you get the battery from? Are you sure it is a genuine Sony product?

Many of the non-genuine batteries available online simply don't work.

If it is a Sony battery, check the contacts and come back with details of your Vaio model and operating system.

The HDD on the A-Series Vaios is under the Palmrest - at the front-left when using the Vaio.

Unfortunately, it requires some disassembly to get at it. The keyboard and then the palmrest need to be removed.

Google for vgnA.pdf for disassembly instructions and which screws to remove.

You don't say if you are going to reinstall the original operating system (XP) from Recovery Discs, but if you are make absolutely sure your new hard drive is NOT of the new Advanced Format type. Check the specifications of the new drive to make sure it is formatted with 512 bytes per sector. Most newer large hard drives are formatted with 4K bytes per sector - these drives will not be recognised by the Recovery Media.

This looks like a Sony USA Model, was it a CTO model (Customised to Order)? If so, have you checked the warranty with Sony USA as in EU the warranty is 2 years for CTO models?

Can you install Windows 8 but not activate? What error message do you get?

Ultimately, you may need to contact Microsoft's Windows 8 Activation Centre and explain the problem to them. You can do this via the Charms -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> Activate by Phone.

The Intel HD 3000 graphics on your Vaio is a part of the Intel® Core™ i3-2330M processor. To replace the graphics you would need to replace the processor.

I can't see a macro function in the specifications.

However, like all compact cameras, you can't change the close focus distance as this is a physical function of the lens itself. Some compact cameras did have the macro mode (symbol was a flower) but this typically only adjusted the camera's speed and aperture settings to give the maximum depth of field. In olden days, this setting may have reconfigured some lens elements to allow slightly closer focusing at the expense of not being able to focus to infinity but in recent times this no longer allows closer focusing and in my experience it did not seem to do anything at all. It looks like it may have been discarded.

Your WX80 should give the full focusing range automatically in all modes and focus down to 5cm at wide angle zoom or down to 150cm at full telephoto zoom.

Have you reinstalled the Camera Driver? The Camera Driver works for all operating systems (XP, Vista, Windows 7 etc).

Download the 'Original Drivers Package' from here: -

You will find it under the 'Preinstalled Drivers and Utilities - Windows Vista' section.

1. Right-click on the downloaded CR2_Drivers.ZIP file and choose 'Extract All'

2. Extract the Drivers to a folder you can find easily.

3. Open the 'Camera' folder from the extracted drivers and double-click on the Setup File depending on which type of Windows you have installed: -

For 32-bit Windows, run DPInst32.EXE

For 64-bit Windows, run DPInst64.EXE

It will return your Vaio back to factory condition as it was when you bought it - including all preinstalled software programs and all drivers.

You will have to run all the Windows Updates and Vaio Updates to update the system since that date.

When you say the Hard Drive is 'stuck', does that mean you cannot boot into Windows?

Unfortunately, unless you made a set of Recovery Discs when you first got your Vaio, you will need to contact Vaio Support and buy a replacement set of discs. I think the cost is around £50.

I guess your Vaio is outside warranty, so you will need to use the premium phoneline tyo contacy Vaio Support. From the UK the number is 0905 0310006 and costs 35p per minute.

Always a good idea to make a set of Recovery Discs as these will be the only way of reinstalling the Operating System in the event of a hard Drive failure.

By the way, what internet anti-virus do you have installed? If you have added your own product to the preinstalled McAfee then there have been lots of instances of a conflict preventing downloads.

The Graphics hardware looks the same as the SVS1511C5E which was released with Windows 7.

I would try installing the Preinstalled Drivers and Utilities for Windows 7 from here: -

Make sure Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device driver is installed and then install the graphics drivers. With the Speed/Stamina Switch set to 'SPEED', first install the Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 / 4000 driver version 8.15.10.2712 and then install the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE, Version 8.17.12.9618 Driver for Microsoft® Windows® 7.

My VPCSB1A9E/B which was sold with SSD installed originally had a SATA 3 controller but a Sony released BIOS update has removed this feature and it now only has a SATA 2 controller and only supports SATA 2 speeds. As far as I know, ALL S-Series Vaios after this date have been sold with only a SATA 2 controller.

Where have you seen that SATA 3 is supported by the S-Series?

Is this RAM comptable with my Sony Vaio?

As far as I know (I don't have the Ultrabook Vaio) the first 4GB of RAM is fixed and cannot be replaced. All you can do is add one single module of up to 4GB.

Anyone here with a SVT-Series Vaio who can confirm?
