The drivers folder contains all the original drivers for your computer. The contents can be downloaded again should you need from the Vaio-Link downloads section of their website, called Original Drivers Package. But just in case you need it and don't have access to the Internet, I'd keep it. I hide it so I can't see it, but it's still there if I need. It doesn't take up a huge amount of space.

Bad block errors are when the CDROM can't read an amount of data on the disk in the drive. If it only happens with certain disks, then it's a fair certaintly that there is an very small but problematic scratch or bad bytes of data that are unreadable by the drive (this may be in part or full due to the reading abilities of the drive itself).

Seb's suggestion of copying the disk then reading from the copy would be the best way to go.

if ur laptop screen is ATI mobility, and not X black with 2 lamps, then u definitely must look directly into it coz u will lose brightness by looking from any angels.

ATi Mobility is the make of graphics chip, it has nothing to do with the screen.

I can only second the other guys and suggest you get it looked at by Vaio Link.

Common problem. If it's when you move the screen it's most likely a loose connection in the hinge.

Next stop, Vaio-Link and sending it in for repair.

You cannot 'unflash' hardware, and I wouldn't recommend trying to revert the BIOS with OEM drivers or similar. If you upgraded using Sony's own BIOS flash upgrade you will be covered within their warranty for problems it may have caused. That will not apply for other BIOS upgrades.

Be sure to use decent quality CD/DVDs, RW ones won't work and you might want to make a couple of copies to make sure and fire off a letter to Sony asking why they're so cheap you have to pay for your own.

Sorry, that's confusing. Sony never include information as to what updates do, so I'm afraid nobody can tell you. It is most frustrating. However Twizted is absolutely right, if you don't have a problem don't apply the update.

Try omegadrivers.net, at your own risk of course as they are third party, but they work for 99.9% of people no probs. ATI do not provide laptop drivers as they are supposed to be provided by the laptop manufacturer. Sony rarely if ever provide updates so omegadrivers.net is your best bet.

I use Nildram. Service is excellent, bandwidth cap is 50Gb/month and uncapped from midnight to 8am and unused bandwidth is added to the following month's allownace which is a great deal better than most. It's £28 a month though, not cheap at all. Have a look at Demon Internet, they are £20 a month and entirely uncapped unless you're using a disgraceful amount of bandwidth in which case they throw you out

That's the default resolution, but you can drop it surely?

Right-click on the desktop, choose Properties and then go to the Settings tab. You should be able to change your screen resolution there.

You can ask for compensation if the repairs aren't conducted within a reasonable amount of time to a decent standard, or not completely fixed first time.

Yeah, that's the model with rather a lot of breakdowns. Try Mr Tony's solution here (grabbing the driver appropriate for your drive) and if that doesn't work, which if all the other cases are anything to go by it won't, I think you'll have to get in touch with Vaio-Link and arrange for repair.

I think it's about time they addressed the constant problems with this drive.

What model of computer/drive is it? I'm afraid broken optical drives are overwhelmingly the biggest problem on ClubVAIO in recent times.

LCD colour profiles

LCD panels aren't all that hot at colour reproduction, usually coming out too bright. XBlacks especially, being bright screens in themselves. Does anyone have an ingenious way of setting the colours to best reproduce a CRT colourset?

You can access the BIOS, it's one of the F keys that you should press when the VAIO logo appears. I forget which for that model, just press them all until it appears

There's not a lot to do in the BIOS though, Sony have locked almost all the options out.

It depends which K-series you have. Only the K-XXXz ones have (or had, last time I checked) hyperthreading. I made that mistake too, but when I checked up it clearly only said it on the Z models. The rest don't. You're probably better off without TBH.

got my laptop 3days ago. that backlight bleed thing is normal, i have a brighter bulb at the bottom as well on my laptop although sony claim their lighting is even across the screen it isnt. all the laptops of this series have the samething, i dont think it can be fixed.

Rather than suggesting that everyone should put up with a faulty screen, I think my suggestion would be that you ignore Sony and ask for it to be repaired as well it clearly is not correct. Bleed may be noticable on a dark screen, but no more than in the top light of his picture. The bottom is way too much.

I got mine back today, was a loose connection.
But, they also gave me a brand new battery, and, for some reason, a brand new DVD Drive... cant complain at that!

Ok that really is weird, when I sent my flickering screen in for repair they also replaced my DVD drive even though there was nothing wrong with it?

Sony don't interact directly with the forum. Your best bet is to ask via eSupport or just phone them. I suspect their response will be 'EU directives mean the quality of our product has suffered, apologies etc our hands are tied' although that doesn't explain why other manufacturers don't appear to have paint coming off their laptops, and at a lower price too.

I always say this, but since we're on the subject, PerfectDisk is an awesomely good defragmenter. Makes a vast difference above even Diskkeeper.
