Well, if you think the screen has just degraded, and is a materials/hardware fault, I suggest the Sale of Goods Act is there for that pupose.

If an item is not "fit for purpose" you are entitled to refund/replacement - free - and the time span is not limited by any guarantee term - all "guarantees" are in fact a hook by all companies offering them, to make buyers think they are getting something extra, whereas your consumer rights are enshrined in law under the S of G Act, in the UK at any rate..... The time limit for claims is described as simply "reasonable length" . In practise, this is almost always longer than most guarantees offer.

This law is definitely on the consumer's side, and the mention of the act is usually enought to make retailers appreciate you're not a patsy, and acknowledge the fact. If they say it doesn't apply, or they claim no knowledge of it - tell 'em you'll see 'em in the Small Claims Court ......

It doesn't usually come to that, as I have found out.

To save time, can I suggest you look at this post ....

Sony Book Store For Ireland

which will tell you most of what you need to know - it isn't a stupid question at all.

I don't really know why Eire isn't able to "use" the UK store, but suspect the reasons are tied up with copywrite/intellectual property rights etc... rather than technical ....

You can use the legal free sites though (Project Gutenburg, etc...) and buy from most anywhere else though, even from US in euros/sterling etc... - can I suggest you could sign up to"MobileForums" which will give you a lot of helpful info regarding this, and "how to..". (free to join, and secure).

They also have a vast free library of their own as well, for all members.

Another good idea is to install "Calibre" ereader management system on your PC/laptop, (again, free, and secure) - very easy to use, from all sources, and gives you a good way to compile your own library, again, for books from all sources, so no software problems, works very well with all Sony devices/models by simply plugging in.

Hit the "Support " at the top of this page, and go from there - there's a variety of contact mehtods, and the Sony Service Helpdesk. Worth a try.

But I do note a "may not be available in your country.....

But your manual etc... that came with the T2 has a list of all European centres, so have a hunt through there for Spain.

But you must have found some contact in Spain ?

However, if it is screen problems, and it was OK when you first got the device, it sounds, with the problem being inside, and on a corner particularly, as if it has suffered an impact, - doesn't have to be very hard sometimes/

I did comment on this in another post, but it almost certainly means the sub-strata is damaged, through impact or flexing of some kind.

I think if was a mistake by the factory, it would have been apparent straight from the box.

If you Google sony Corp Spain, and do some research, you can probably find a name to contact if you really think it's not your fault.

Hello midarq - by side lamp, I presume you mean the light on a Sony cover ? A flexible arm with light that lights up when swivelled upwards to illuminate the reader page ?

It can simply be the battery needs renewing - rechargeable ones are OK, although battery life is good on these lamps. The battery is changed through a flip lid in the left side of the cover - shouldn't break your nails, it opens fairly easily !

The other reason may be the bulb needs changing - haven't done this myself, but should be standard maintainance level..... I'll have a look tomorrow.

Try the battery first anyway, it's the most likely.

If you've got them in your normal download files, you can just use it as a library, certainly via Calibre, for example.

And if the T1's died, you won't be able to do anything with it anyway .....

If they're in ADE you can transfer them to a maximum of, I think it's 6 devices. Simply register the new reader, presuming it's a Sony.

Don't know if you need to do anything re: the defunct/expired/deceased device ....

Screen Failed ? Do you mean it won't come on, or do you mean the screen has a strange appearance ?

If the former, are you sure the device is charged up ? Very rare for a screen to simply give up the ghost .....

However, if it has lines, grey areas, or other strange features on the screen when it powers up, then you've almost certainly got a damaged sub-strata fault. This is 90+PERCENTAGESIGN the result of a sharpish impact, causing the screen to flex, which is all it takes to damage it. (You may have done it without realising it.)The top layer of the screen is tough, it's the next layer that is fragile.I have heard of one case where a dog "trod" on a screen (something larger than a chiwhawotsit, I'd suggest....) and did for it. Another fairly common one is falling asleep on it ....

And the only solution is to replace the screen, hence the high cost. It's baqsically more cost effective to replace the reader, new, refurbed, or used - buyer beware, obviously .... Unless there's a back-street reader repair shop with a pipline into a screen factory !

This is not just Sony readers by the way, all readers have this weak spot - sometimes the slightest flex, like a few inches drop onto a carpet will be enough to kill it.

( Luck is also involved, of course, whatever the reader - I think I've managed to drop/lean on all of the Sony range, and a Bookeen, and all still survive. Actually, thinking logically, the T1/2 & 3 when it appears, should be better than the x50 generation in this respect, they're lighter !

Umm.... well, I've always assumed you could, but never needed to myself.....

But I had a go ...... by going to Menu/Customize View/Crop Page/Manual .....

Then you are presented with the page with moveable "icons" in each corner which you can move to select the area you want the page to crop to........ but when I did this and hit "Done", the page reverted back to the original.

It's probably me, and I've misunderstood what this feature can do, so if there's anyone out there .... ??

If you mean it's asking if you want to "Save to File" , select yes.

It will/should then download into your main "Downloads" section, it'll tell you when it's complted this (a few seconds), and you can then transfer it to your Reader library.

Oh, have you checked in your downloads folder, just in case they're lurking there ?

If you're still stuck, and can't use the reader, as a get you by solution so you can at least use it,try installing Calibre on your PC/laptop, and drag n' drop any books you saved to file. This may enable you to read 'em in original version, it's a very simple management system to use.

It will recognise the T1 automatically, no fiddling needed, just plug it in

With Calibre, you can at least compile a library and use it, for any books you then select save to file - unless they have a DRM on them.

Although I just can't see why this should be happening. Any luck on reauthorising it ?

A fairly sharp impact, at any angle, is usually enough to mess up most devices, and I think it unlikely a "chip" is dislodged.

But, if you feel you have nowt to lose,( and you're likely to know what you'll be looking at once you get at its' inards !)

press on gaily, fiddle away ....

The 505 is, anyway, quite a few generations old now, (in modern "bung it out" terms, anyway ! ) complicating things re: repair still further.

If you hanker after the feel and heft of the ally case,you might still find a refurb/used 3/650 online, praps even a 505, reasonably priced - although make sure you know what refurb's you're buying. Some of them are retailer, rather than factory, refurbed. Not necesarily the best choice.....

And I confesss I am Appley-ignorant, so praps someone not so tech-dunce as me will help ........

Get a non-DRM version.....

If it's not a pub-dom work, or not issued in a non-locked form, you can't load anything on a non-compatible device.

If purchased legally, whether it's fair/reasonable that you can't do what you want, ( i.e. load it onto the device of your choice ) with something you've paid for,(i.e. an intellectual property rather than a physical ) is another can of little wriggly things altogether ...

The drop has sadly almost certainly done for your reader - not a peculiarity to Sony, all readers are pretty fragile when it comes to hard impacts, unless you're lucky !

[ 'Course, I'll now get 1,000's writing in to claim they dropped theirs off the Matterhorn with no problems whatsoever, but ........ ]

Hard or soft resets won't help[, it sounds like the sub-strata layer below the glass outer has been damaged.

The Sony Support seems to be OK , I got as far as Contact Us, and the phone no's and email query forms - did you use the link above ? I've been off Forum for a short while, so unless I've missed something ....

It almost certainly isn't goiung to be economic to repair, it is a costly old job getting a screen replaced, near to the cost of a new device - might as well invest in a T1/T2 , the T1's are still about if you look, and either are excellent devices.

( I fear the Sony Centre would have been of little help, in most people's experience. It is a misconception that these are/were anything to do with Sony Corp - they were totally separate commercial franchises, independent of Sony itself. My own limited contact with them ended when I realised the so-called "assistant" was doing little "advising/assisting" beyond trying to flog me the dearest option available ! Technical knowledge was woeful and inaccurate ..... )

Did you either get a message on-screen either on device or PC saying it was safe to dis-connect, or did you use the "safely remove portable device" feature in Windows ?

With either of these, it should have been OK.

If you still have your books in a library on your PC as downloads, you could try installing Calibre (free, and excellent) and transferring them over into the calibre library, and then into the Sony . Calibre automatically recognises most readers, and all Sonys, so no set-up hassles.

Worth a try.

Could you not, at the worst, download an on-line version , have it on your reader library, and access it like thyat ? Not as easy as having it "built-in" but a solution ?

Could the problem be a corrupted file ?I have heard some weird things caused by these benighted productions.

I must say I've been fortunate enough to have never had any problems with any of my Sony devices - well, none that I couldn't manage to sort out with the help of tech-friendly son/here/ or on-line manuals etc...

Worth a try with Sony I'd've thought ?

The full hard reset details are in the manual - also available on-line in afree download - but there is always the battery which can be taken out, that be a kind of a hardreset..... But don't forget, with a hard reset you lose all your content, so make sure you back everything up first - which presumably you can't do anyway ? Have you tried hooking up to your PC/laptop ?

And, if I may say so, an excellent reader ! I'm getting to grips with the T2 now, and have to say it's a great improvement on the T1.

The "feel" is, to me anyway, much more akin to the 3/650 generation, and not as obviously plastic as the shiney T1 - it feels comfy to hold. Lighter, of course....

And the nifty controls, that don't much look like buttons as such, & seem to sink into the body, are very neat.

So I reckon it looks good.

Screen-wise, all seems fine - good grey-colour background, decent fonts & sizes available, and the usual easy to use Sony menu set-ups.

Wi-fi and browser are all there, and functioning acceptably - remember this the next step on from the T1, so some stuff didn't really need a lot of work.

So, personally, I think it's a good'un, and a decent response to various complaints about appearance etc.. over the T1.

What's next ? Well, I suppose the lit screen is being thought about, although I question just how useful or desirable it is - I have tried a couple of other makes held by friends, ( I know, but it doesn't make me a bad person, does it !! ) and found it OK, but I wouldn't want it on all the time, it made my eyes ache ! Personally I'm OK with a clip-on light, but I suppose it represents a search for the "killer feature" - like wi-fi was for a while until almost every reader at least had a model with it.

Anyway, good luck, and enjoy whatever one you choose.

celiney, there should be no problem using any (major) card, from any of the usual online sellers - this is in UK, right?

Although you can "buy foreign" , certainly from the US, without too many problems, the transaction gets either priced in sterling, or you pay in dollars which are converted to sterling.

Any request for redeem/voucher card is usually something that happens after you've got to the cashpoint ie before you click to buy, or sometimes before you give your card details.

If you haven't got any, you just ignore it and move on to purchase.

Well swainsd, first, books are either DRM protected or they aren't ! I don't think they suddenly acquire it ....

If you bought the books from a seller in the correct format for your reader, then they are yours in that format.

For example, an epub book will load to the Sony, or anything from the Sony Store, for example.

They won't suddenly become DRM'd so you can't read 'em - any seller specific DRM will be taken care of by you buying it to be read on a reader that reads the format.

If you've acquired them from any source that "won't" read on your reader, then you've made a booboo - for example, Kindle books - you can buy them, but the Amazon DRM would stop you being able to read them on your Sony, and you'ld need K4PC on your PC anyway, to get 'em.

So I'm a bit confused by what you describe.

The only exceptions, naturally, are non-DRM'd books - any Public Domain books (Gutenburg for example, or out of copyright works) , those from a private library ( such as MobileRead for example), or simply any work that says help yerself it's unrestricted ....

Just picked up on this - did you purchase the device in UK ?

It may be that if it came from outside Sony UK/EU areas it won't be recognised here ... although I'm not aware that this is the case.

I see you haven't had any replies so far - not a good sign I'm afraid ...

Always worth contacting Sony Support - and have you tried the search facility on this Forum ? That's definitely worth a crack.

Glad my post was of interest - incidentally, might have found a new "market" for them.

I persuaded my neighbour - who is of the well-known "certain age" party, and has issues with TV audio - to try 'em, and, once we got over the "messing up me hairdo" situation, was extremely impressed.................

The "so that's why they wear them" quote afterwards was fairly priceless I thought ......

I must first confess to straying over from the Reader Forum, but I wanted to give my opinion on the Sony MDR-1r cans.

I listen mainly to "Classical" music, leaning heavily towards Handell and Purcell, and the Baroque in general, and lashings of Blues, everything from Mr. Johnson to Joe Bonamassa, with the guitar being a constant.

Alas, so many tracks, so little money .....

Anyway, I shall save a bit of cash for a fair while now, as I'll have to go through my entire, fairly eclectic, collection, listening all over again for the things I missed in the past.

Because these headphones are simply awesome, to my ears anyway. Crystal clear, delivering a depth of tone like you wouldn't believe, and fantastic treble and bass, right through the range. I just could not fault them, and the one time I tried them out at very high volume, was enough to persuade me I now have no need to ruin my eardrums any more than they are already - the quality of sound is pretty extraordinary.

I used to think I had decent 'phones in the past, but not alongside these little beauties. It really is like being in the best seats at a performance.

In fact, watching a DVD of a live concert with them on, is just that !

Appearance-wise, no complaints either. They are trim and neat, light to wear, and very comfortable.

My son and heir, a musician anyway, took them on test for a few days, and I had to threaten him with giving his inheritance to charity before I could get 'em back - and even then he thought for a while ............

Oh, and as far as keeping your sounds to yourself goes, you're safe with these - I got no complaints from those watching yet another re-run of " Downton ...." while I lost myself in my own little combination of "The Messiah"

and Gary Moore and Bonamassa. ( Quite an achievement, frankly........ )

So, in my humble opinion, Sony are onto a real winner with these brilliant headphones.

In fact, if I can convince myself to either carry a man-bag , or wear jackets with proper pockets, I might be diching the Sennhauser earbuds for gadding about in the open air, 'cos I'm now totally spoilt ......
