How to do a soft reset of your Xperia Tablet S

Hi all,

For those with the original Tablet S, resetting the device was as easy as sticking a paperclip into the 'reset' hole and job done. With the new Xperia Tablet S however, there is no reset hole - so how do you perform a reset if the Xperia hangs or needs rebooting?

The answer is this - hold down the POWER button and the VOLUME UP button for at least 10 seconds (btw, I hope you also know that by pressing the power button and the volume DOWN button you get a screen shot - but not when the tablet has hung!).

If you hold the Power button and the Volume up button for 10 seconds (or until you see the Sony logo), then release the power button BUT CONTINUE TO PRESS THE VOLUME UP button, you get addional reset options including Restore to Factory Settings - not a lot of people know this!

This should be all you need to either soft or hard reboot the Xperia Tablet S, and whatever your choice or reset, you're back to business :-)

Message was edited by: p4ult212

Re: Is the Sony Tablet experience as poor as it sounds?

I'm sticking up for the tablet too. I have the latest Xperia Tablet S, and it is a far cry from the original one, which was very good (don't get me wrong), but the Xperia Tablet S is simply mind blowing!

Sure Apple has the tablet market firmly in its grasp, and iOS is very easy to use, but it;s costly, limited in terms of what Apple wants you to use, and you still have problems with formats for playback of music, videos, data files etc.

The Android based Xperia Tablet skips merrily around all those obsticles and I watch any movie I want in any format, listen to any music file in any format and transfer documents and data between my devices. You also have the added benefit of remote control and DLNA support, so you can control the TV (or other appliances) or stream via your DLNA. You can add a 32Gb memory card, so that's not even an issue (but a massive saving on the iPad equivalent).

I think what it ultimately comes down to is what you're familiar and comfortable with. I use an iPhone and love it, but I use an Xperia Tablet and love that too. I have tried iPad, it's great, but it's too limited, and what I want from an iPad I get on my iPhone, ergo Xperia bridges the gap for me - and as another person rightly commented, the AppStore and the Android Store are so alike, they might as well be twins!

Hope that helps - all opinions are mine alone, based on my experience of using the Xperia Tablet S.

DSLT Alpha owners: What improvements would you make to your camera?

The noise you can hear is the shutter. Of course there is no mirror noise so if you compared the A55 to the A580 (D-SLR version of A55) then the A580 would be noisier because of mirror slap. Not moving the mirror not only gives us advantages for speed of focus, quick frames per second, phase detection AF in movie and live view but it also gives us the advantage that it eliminates the noise of the mirror. However, you will still hear the shutter. If you combine this with the fact that you can shoot up to 10fps of course this means that you will hear the noise of the shutter 10 times in a second - or really 20 times as there are 2 "curtains", a front curtain which starts the exposure and a rear curtain which finishes the exposure. These physically move in front of the sensor to start and stop the exposure.

Not moving the mirror also has the advantage of reducing camera shake for long exposures. Sometimes cameras have a mirror lock up function where you are preparing a long exposure shot on a tripod. You compose the image and prepare the settings but to avoid any slight shake of the camera when the mirror moves up, with some cameras, you can select to lift the mirror before you press the shutter (which will black out the optical viewfinder). As I said, this reduces any camera shake which could be caused by the lifting of the mirror but with SLT there's no need as the mirror does not move.

But to summarise as a short answer (too late!), the A55 is likely to make less noise than it's equivalent A580 due to not moving the mirror but you will still hear the sound of the shutter which could make even more of an impression on you because it can fire at 10fps.

Hope that helps clear up your query :-)

Hi,

If you go to the following URL: http://www.koyotesoft.com/indexEn.html

Then, download the following Freeware application: Free HD Converter V1.7

This will allow you to open your ".mts" formatted video files, and convert them to ".avi", or ".mp4" or a host of other formats, all compatible with any device you are aiming the file at..!

As another piece of advice - the media players on many laptops struggle due to technical things called "codecs" that are often missing, and hence, video files may not play, or in some cases you may only hear audio, but not see video. A very good (also free!) all-round video player is called VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) - this will play all known video formats on PC's, as well as DVD's - give that a try too?

Good luck!

Paul
