Sony Group Corporation (Sony) and THU announced the winner of the second edition of Sony Talent League by THU, a global challenge that supports young creators worldwide and aims to discover the next generation of creative minds in the digital entertainment industry.
The grand winner is “Knowhere, USA”, a cross-platform experience centered on a 2D animation show and mobile game led by Elizabeth Dix & Gracie Dix, from the United States. “Knowhere, USA” follows Mosi Morgan, an 11-year-old Black, Pakistani New Yorker, as he moves from NYC to his mother’s secret, privately-owned hometown of Knowhere, where everyone is considered a global expert in their field. There, Mosi must figure out how an ordinary kid like himself can ever fit in among so many extraordinary citizens. The future of what education looks like is in tech and, by providing fun, narrative-based games, we can be a leading force in that new wave.
“I’m still very speechless. We are so beyond grateful.”, Elizabeth’s reaction to winning the challenge. “To all THU, this was such an unbelievably experience, you guys really made it feel like family”, said Gracie.
The winner was decided by the Grand Jury: Peter Ramsey, Director and Producer; Kevin Baillie, VFX Supervisor; and Robert Valley, Director. Peter Ramsey commented “it’s a great idea, it can do a ton of good and most of all, it’s groundbreaking”.
The team will be awarded a full-ride to THU Main Event on September 19-24, 2022 – entry ticket, travel, accommodation, and food – and stage time to present the project, in addition to their prize as one of the finalists.
Over the last ten weeks, finalists received invaluable mentorships from established creators such as Shuhei Yoshida (Head of Indies Initiative for Sony Interactive Entertainment); David Prescott (SVP Creative Production); Kara Oropallo (Animation Production Manager, Consultant and Trainer); Kevin Young (Head of Creative Technology at The Mills’ London Studio); Kris Pearn (Animation Director and
Producer at Sony Pictures Animation) among many other legendary creators and advisors.
The three finalists shared their journey through an online Project Diary open to the public for free, allowing other aspiring talents to follow along, learn from their process, and use this educational content to get insights that could help bring their own projects to life. Project Diaries and Final Pitches can be accessed on THU’s website, with a section for each project.
