ITN invests in Sony MLS-X1 switcher as part of strategic development towards scalable resourcing

London, UK – September 4th, 2025 – ITN, the UK broadcaster renowned for its commitment to quality journalism and innovative broadcasting solutions, has announced a significant investment in the Sony scalable live production MLS-X1 switcher. This strategic move marks a pivotal step in ITN's transition towards an IP-defined, software-first approach, enhancing its production capabilities for the future.

The decision to invest in the MLS-X1 switcher comes as ITN undergoes a review of its Channel 4 news operations. This investment not only reflects ITN's commitment to maintaining high production standards but also aligns with the evolving landscape of broadcast technology. The MLS-X1 switcher is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing broadcast infrastructures, providing ITN with the flexibility and power needed to adapt to future challenges.

Part of Sony’s growing Networked Live ecosystem, the MLS-X1 switcher supports the integration of external devices using southbound communication protocols, for advanced network messaging, allowing for a more streamlined production process. It offers enhanced macro capabilities, enabling operators to execute complex production tasks with ease and efficiency. Additionally, the ability to resize and reposition keys dynamically strengthens the creative possibilities for live broadcasts, while new conditional actions allow for more sophisticated control over production elements, ensuring that ITN can deliver high-quality content consistently.

ITN's decision to select the MLS-X1 was based on a competitive tender process, where Sony showcased exceptional value and a strong understanding of ITN's operational needs. This collaboration is expected to enhance ITN's production capabilities, allowing for more dynamic and engaging news coverage.

As ITN prepares to implement the MLS-X1 switcher, the broadcaster is excited about the potential improvements in its news production processes. The switcher will play a crucial role in the upcoming revamp of Channel 4 News’ production control facilites at ITN, set to go live later this year. Jenny King, Head of Technical Production at ITN stated, "This investment is not just a technology refresh; it's about positioning ITN and Channel 4 News for the future. The MLS-X1 switcher will empower our expert team to continue delivering compelling news stories with greater efficiency and creativity, whilst also giving us the technical and workflow flexibility we need as our output continues to evolve."

Additionally, Norbert Paquet, Head of Live Production, Sony Europe commented, "We are delighted that ITN chose our software-based MLS-X1. The MLS-X1 switcher is designed to meet the evolving needs of broadcasters, and we are confident that it will provide ITN with the tools necessary to enhance their production capabilities and deliver exceptional content to their audience."
